Toronto Baptist Intercultural Services (TBIS)

The Toronto Baptist Intercultural Services (TBIS) ministers to the Muslim, Hindu, Sikh and Buddhist newcomer families in our city through ESL, cultural training, literacy, homework clubs and skills training.

English as a Second Language (ESL)
In three classrooms on Dixon Road and Weston Road neighbourhoods, we teach six levels of Adult English, mostly for women.  Beyond English learning, heads of families begin to understand Toronto culture, learn banking, shopping, transportation, and about leadership to face different challenges which they and their children must face in their new country.  We are building relationships that open doors into our neighbours' lives, homes, hearts - enabling us to share our own lives, the Gospel and to pray together.

Homework Clubs
Our elementary and high school homework clubs minister to dozens of kids, led by many seasoned teachers and high school students (fulfilling ehtier 40 hours of community service).Consulting with congregations, helping them assess needs of distressed and vulnerable new immigrant groups in the community.  Coordinating efforts of a dozen churches to offer resettlement services.  Support to an Ethiopian Congregation in the GTA, a South Asian settlement office and development work in Africa.
